Session expired while answering security questions on the Apple iPad

posted: September 25, 2012

As soon as it was available, I updated my Apple iPad to iOS6, and I've been a happy camper since the update. That is to say, until I tried to download a new app from the AppStore today.

After I entered my password for my Apple ID, I was greeted with a new screen, prompting me to select three security questions, answers, and a backup mail address in case it all goes pear-shaped. And unfortunately, it did...

I did as ordered and selected three questions paired with their answers and the additional email address, after which I got an error: "session expired, please try again". Which I did, and did again, but to no avail. Choosing the "not now" option to skip the security process entirely wasn't an option either - whatever I did, I still wasn't able to download my shiny new app.

Fortunately the solution is very simple (you certainly do not need to wipe your iPad or iPhone as some people suggested). Here is what you need to do:

  1. Quit the App Store in multi-tasking (tap the home button twice, tap and hold the app, and when it starts to jiggle click the red minus icon to close it)
  2. Following the same procedure, close all other apps
  3. Tap Settings on the home screen
  4. Tap Safari
  5. Tap Clear History
  6. Tap the "Clear History" button
  7. Tap Clear Cookies and Data
  8. Tap the "Clear Cookies and Data" button

This worked like a charm for me! If that doesn't solve your problem, there's another option you could try (as I said, the previous worked for me, so this next part is untested: use at your own discretion).

  1. Quit App Store in multi-tasking once again
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap General
  4. Tap Date & Time
  5. Set your time ahead (e.g. two hours or more) and your date to at least a year later than our current one
  6. Go back to your App Store and try again
  7. You can edit your Date & Time after

A big thanks to Nicole Rhianne who posted this solution online! If you have found another solution, please tell me and I'll put it online as well, so others can benefit.
