D*Note - Shed My Skin

posted: August 8, 2010

YouTube - evergrowing database of small, online movies - has something to offer for just about everyone connected to the internet, myself being no exception. I don't watch that many videos on YouTube, but when I do I tend not to watch one particular thing, I like switching from one video to the next, spanning various subjects and topics.

So when I was hopping from one video to the next yesterday night, I stumbled upon this little gem: the videoclip for Shed My Skin by D*Note, a track which became one of my favourite tracks years ago, when I first heard it. And now, years later, this little video still manages to amaze me.

I have to say though, that videoclips as a whole are a bit lost on me: during the day I tend to listen to as much music as I possibly can, but I've rarely got the time to sit down and watch the clips. While a good videoclip can certainly add value to the music itself, I rarely find one that sticks in my mind, unlike the songs themselves.

This isn't the case for Shed My Skin - this particular clip is a true work of art (as is the song). For those who don't know the clip, you can see it here:

The concept of the clip is incredibly simple: it shows a man on a tropical beach (probably Ibiza, as some of the comments on the video have pointed out), dancing to a great tune without a care in the world. He's the only one dancing on the beach, most likely meaning it's all in his mind - all the other people are just wandering around, laying down in the sun, doing whatever holiday people normally do.

It's the ultimate "do whatever you feel like, just don't bother or harm anybody else" message. As the lyrics say: "I don't mind what people say" indeed!

The combination of this videoclip with the dreamy song that is Shed My Skin, sung by Anita Kelsey in her sweet, smooth voice is just pure perfection.

Since I discovered the song years ago, it has become some sort of a motto for me, one of life's little lessons so to speak. The song has never loosened its grip on me since then, and I hope it never will.

If you do not yet know the song, I really suggest you give it a listen - it really breathes a relaxing atmosphere, the lyrics are soothing (again, Anita Kelsey does wonders for this song) and the music is just wonderful. Here are the lyrics, by the way:

I'm running.. through the fields
Laughing... dreaming...
I'm driving... through the mountains
Breathing... a new life

I don't mind what people say
No, I won't look back for another day
Gonna shed my skin and walk away...
I don't mind what people say
No, I won't look back for another day
Gonna shed my skin and walk away...

I'm floating... through the river
Twisting... and turning...
Running through the suns
Searching... a new life...

I don't mind what people say
No, I won't look back for another day
Gonna shed my skin and walk away...
I don't mind what people say
No, I won't look back for another day
Gonna shed my skin and walk away...
I don't mind what people say
No, I won't look back for another day
Gonna shed my skin and walk away...

The only thing left for me to say after all this, is a word of thanks - thank you D*Note!
