Can't Live In A Living Room

posted: September 22, 2009

Picture of Red Zebra sleeve for the song Can't Live In A Living Room Every morning my alarm clock sounds at seven o'clock precise, which gives me just enough time to catch the highlights on the news, and snooze through one-song-and-a-half before it's really time to get out of bed.

Today I was awoken by a pleasant surprise: Can't Live In A Living Room by Red Zebra, one of my all time favourite tracks. One of the greatest Belgian punk/new-wave songs of it's time, and once it's stuck inside your head, very hard to get rid off. Not that that's a bad thing, mind you :)

Even though it's a real classic, I'm afraid I have to admit that it's the *only* song I know by Red Zebra. So when I drove to work about an hour later, I decided to look up some more information about Red Zebra - including the lyrics, because I couldn't even remember the first word of the lyrics anymore.

During my break, I started Googling the name of the band as well as the song title, and discovered the lyrics. And a Wikipedia article dedicated to Red Zebra, which came as quite a shock to me. Not that I was that surprised about the page itself, more about the contents.

It seems these guys have quite an impressive discography, which rather makes me less inclined to admit I know so little tracks from them. I'll be sure to check out some more stuff from them.

Oh, and by the way, the first word of the lyrics is "tranquilizers", as you can verify below...

Tranquilizers make me nervous
I can't relax no more
Should I go out or stay in
I never had this feeling before

And then I see your smiling faces
You are all laughing at me
Oh, doctor doctor can't you see
There must be something wrong with me

I can't piss in the toilet
Can't sleep in my bedroom
There's no food in the kitchen
I can't live in a living room

And then I hear your silent voices
They are all talking about me
Oh doctor doctor can't you see
I'm not the man I used to be

I (I) can't (can't) live (live)
In a (in a) living (living) room (room)
I can't live in a living room

Tranquilizers make me nervous
I can't relax no more
Should I go out or stay in
I never had this feeling before

And the I see your smiling faces
You are all laughing at me
Oh, doctor doctor can't you see
The things that happened to me

I just can't live any
I just can't live anymore

If you don't know the song - please check it out - they don't call them classics for nothing!
